Banks of The Ohio

by Steve Kaufman

This tune is an excerpt from Steve Kaufman's Band in a Book: Bluegrass Vocals (MB20425BCD). This book includes all the parts for lead and rhythm guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass. This is a great resource and way to get a Bluegrass band up and running in no time.

We have posted the same song in their respective webzines, be sure to visit all of them to get all the parts for this tune.

Performance Notes

Banjo Solo: Measures 2, 4, 8, 10 and 14 have a typical timing issue. You have a pair of 1/16 notes woven into a nest of eighth notes. The best way to practice the timing of these type measures is to do the roll as written except only hit the first 1/16 note as if it was an eighth note and leave the second eighth note off. Practice this until it plays real smoothly and then add the 1/16 notes back into the roll without changing the right-hand roll.

Measure 15: the two notes played together are called double stops. Use the 2nd finger on the 3rd string for each of the three double stops. Other fingers will be used on the 2nd string but the consistency of the 3rd string notes will allow the 2nd finger to remain on the string adding to the general feel and sound of sustained notes.
